Sitemap Checker
Finds a site's sitemap through robots.txt or the default address and reports what is in it.
Enter a site. Peach looks for a sitemap in robots.txt, falls back to /sitemap.xml, and reads the first one it finds. It makes one request for a public page. It needs JavaScript to run; the explanation below does not.
What this checks, and what it does not
It checks
- Sitemap lines in robots.txt, then /sitemap.xml if there are none.
- Whether the file is a sitemap or a sitemap index, and how many entries it has.
- How many entries carry a last-modified date, and how many point to another host or use http.
It does not
- It reads one file. If that file is an index, the sitemaps it lists are counted but not opened.
- It does not request the listed pages, so it does not find dead links.
- It reads up to 3 MB. A larger file is reported as truncated.
How to read the result
An HTML page where a sitemap should be is a common result on single-page apps: the server answers every unknown address with the app. A crawler asking for the sitemap gets nothing it can use.
Last-modified dates are optional and useful. They tell a crawler which pages changed without it having to fetch them all.

Frequently asked questions
Do AI crawlers use sitemaps?
It is not documented for most of them. Search crawlers do, and the search indexes are what several AI engines draw on.
Where should the sitemap be declared?
In robots.txt, with a line starting "Sitemap:" followed by the full address. That is the first place this tool and most crawlers look.
What is a sitemap index?
A sitemap that lists other sitemaps. Large sites use one because a single sitemap is limited to 50,000 addresses.
